TRIP TO BLAIR DRUMMOND SAFARI PARK

Hello everybody! I am back!

I took a few months off blogging because I've had exams at uni and various other things going on, but my exams are almost over and I should have more time to spend on blogging and my Instagram rather than revising!

This blog is all about my trip to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. I went to Scotland for a long weekend last week with Callum and on the way up to Fort William, we stopped to look at all the animals. On Friday night we stayed in a lovely little B&B just down the road from the Safari Park.

Hillview Cottage is a gorgeous little B&B tucked away just off the main road. We arrived late afternoon and were made to feel very welcome by the owner Jon, who showed us to our room. Below are a few pictures taken off the website, I'll leave a link to it here.

We had a cosy night in the guest house- there is a gorgeous lounge area to relax in, as well as a TV in each room, and tea and coffee facilities. We had a nice ensuite with a lovely powerful shower.
In the morning, Jon cooked Full English Breakfasts and cereals and fruit were also available.

Once we'd eaten, we said goodbye to Hillview Cottage and headed over to the Safari Park for 10, so we could get in early before it got too busy. (All pictures from the Safari Park are my own)

We made our way around the park and looked at all the amazing animals. I have been to the Safari Park many times before- the first time when I was two years old (see pictures below!)

Blair Drummond Safari Park have a 'Link To The Wild' conservation initiative which supports projects chosen by the keepers. These projects aim to help animals in the wild lead better and safer lives. To find out more about the individual projects, click here.

I was glad we got there early, because the park got really busy later on. There are restaurants and food stalls around the park, as well as a BBQ area. You can take your own picnic in too.

If you're visiting with children, there is a huge playpark with swings, slides, a sandpit and a huge adventure play fort, so they can let off some steam. Blair Drummond Safari Park have over 350 different animals, including a Bird of Prey Centre- so your little ones should be entertained!

The safari walk is home to meerkats, otters, penguins and red ruffed lemurs. You can walk onto a platform to see the tigers in their enclosure. We went back and forth three times without seeing any tigers, then on the fourth attempt, we saw two gorgeous Amur tigers.

The pet farm houses alpacas, llamas, goats, horses, pigs, rabbits, sheep and various fowl. Back in the main area near the gift shop is an outdoor pool for sea lions, which leads back into the sea lion presentation area. We watched a show and saw how intelligent these creatures are.

We wandered around the park and saw peacocks, elephants, rhinos and had an interesting talk with some of the researchers about the giraffes.

We took a boat trip around Chimpanzee Island. I always love sailing to see the chimps, and as we were fairly early, the queue wasn't big so the boat wasn't too busy either. We got told all about the chimps on the island and were asked how to identify a chimp from a monkey. (Monkeys have long tails- chimps do not).

Then we went to Lemur Land (which is my favourite part). Ring-tailed lemurs are one of my favourite animals and I loved watching them climbing and playing with each other. You could walk around Lemur Land with the lemurs free to come and investigate you, which I love! Below is a picture of me trying not to startle the lemur, and I will pop a selfie I took with one on my Instagram story!

Then we got back into the car and started the Safari Drive! I asked Callum to drive so that I could take some pictures of the animals. The 'animal drive-thru', as we kept calling it, started with various cattle and deer (and other deer-like creatures!)

We also saw a rhino and several zebra. I believe some of the zebras used to be in the enclosure with the giraffes, but now they are all in the Safari Drive.

There were camels and bison and more deer in the last enclosure, but I always love driving through the lion enclosure. The lions were sunbathing when we visited and they looked so peaceful as we drove past. You may have already seen my Instagram post of the sleeping lions, but I'll post the picture again here.

There was also a macaque house drive-through enclosure, but this was optional and I decided I wouldn't risk taking the car in there as the monkeys have been known to cause damage and rip off wing mirrors! If you've watched the episode of Peter Kay's Car Share when John and Kayleigh drive off with a monkey on the car, you'll recognise the park as that episode was filmed there!

Here's a throwback from 2008 when I met the giraffe that Peter Kay and Sian Gibson got a picture with (they totally copied me).

I hope you enjoyed this blog, head over to my Instagram account (@thatmardyyorkshirelass) to see more pictures on my story highlights.

If you're going to Blair Drummond Safari Park soon, tag me in your pictures so I can see what you got up to!

Until next time,

BANNATYNE SPA BREAK!

Hello everyone!

This week's blog is all about my weekend at the Bannatyne Hotel & Spa in Darlington.
Bannatyne have hotels and spas up and down the country and I'd heard many great reviews. Callum booked us a spa break for my birthday which was so lovely of him! Aren't I lucky?

We headed to Darlington (an hour's drive away) on Saturday afternoon and checked into the hotel, which is also very popular for wedding receptions. We were made to feel extremely welcome as we dropped off our bags in the room.

Then we headed to the spa, which is about a 5 minute drive away. The staff were really friendly and showed us around. We got a bag each containing a towel, robe and flipflops. After we'd got changed into our swimming gear, we headed to the spa where we were booked in for back, neck and shoulder massages. Our spa therapists were so lovely and made us feel extremely relaxed.
I didn't take any pictures at the spa because I was having such a good time relaxing but I'll insert some from the website so you can see what it looks like.

We spent a few hours using the pool, steam room, sauna and hot tub. It was lovely to just relax and enjoy our stay. The sauna is supposed to be good for alleviating pain and stress as well as increasing circulation, and the steam room was really good for clearing our colds away (everyone seems to be a bit sniffly at the moment don't they?)
Then we headed back to the hotel and got ready for our evening meal in the in-house Maxine's Restaurant.
The menu was incredible, with so many amazing dishes available. I'll include some pictures I took of our meal below.
Starter: Pork Belly Bites

Main: Gormet Burger

Main: Chicken, Pancetta and Spinach in a White Wine Sauce

We also had ice cream for pudding too! After finishing the last of our gorgeous wine, we headed back up to the room to watch some telly before settling in for the night.
When we got up, we were able to help ourselves to a breakfast buffet. We both had a Full English, followed by tea and toast.

I hope you enjoyed this blog! I loved my weekend away and can't wait to go back for a treat another time.

Until next time,
Charlotte x

*Our spa break package included x2 treatments, full use of the spa facilities, evening meal, overnight stay in the hotel and breakfast.*

WHAT I GOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY 2019

Hi everyone!
This blog is all about the presents I was very kindly given for my birthday this year. I’d just like to say that I am in no way trying to brag about anything, I am so lucky to have received some lovely bits and bobs and would just like to share a few things with you, because I know I love being nosy and finding out what people got for their birthdays.

From my parents I got a gorgeous burgundy shawl which will be perfect for weddings and YFC dinner dances! I’ve been stealing my mum’s grey shawl for ages now so I’m really grateful to have received my own. I can’t find this online and don’t currently have a picture but I will try and upload one once I’m home at the weekend!

My parents also got me a lovely tassel key ring from High Bird Designs. I’m going to put it on my Joules tweed handbag! I really love High Bird Designs, you’ll have seen some other gorgeous bespoke pieces featured on my blog before.

I got a beautiful fur collar from my sister, alongside this leather Hiho Silver bracelet. I’m excited to wear the fur collar with my tweed jacket to add a bit more to my outfit!

From my grandparents, I got a pair of Hortons England socks (purchased from Wild & Westbrooke  in York). I haven’t worn them yet but they look so comfy and I can’t wait to try them out! They also got me the  Wrendale Designs Tortoise Mug, which is so cute! I’ve loved tortoises since I was little and hope to have my own one day (I’ve never been allowed one before). We have a few other Wrendale mugs and I’ve featured some on here too.

When I was younger I remember my mum got my granny a Dcuk and we wrapped it in a big box full of straw and poked air holes in the top to trick her into thinking it was a real animal. I was looking at my granny’s small collection of Dcuks a few weeks ago and said how I’d quite like one for myself. I love how each Dcuk has its own name (mine is called Clyde) and how there are so many styles available.

My friend Shannon got me a gorgeous scarf from Joules which is really cosy and looks fab too. I’ll be taking some photos with the scarf over the next few days and will post them when I do! She also got me a gorgeous friendship bracelet with the quote “True friends are like stars- you don’t always see them but you know they’re always there”. That’s one of my favourite quotes because it is so true!

I got lots of lovely toiletries from my friends and family and I’ll include some in a list below.

-Sanctuary Spa Drift Off Bath Soak
-Sanctuary Spa Dream Easy Pillow Mist
-Soap & Glory Birthday Washes Set
-Jack Wills Body Spray Trio
-Lush ‘Peachy’ Bath Bomb
-Treacle Moon Gift Set

Finally, Callum got me a spa break to The Bannatyne Hotel & Spa in Darlington! I’m so excited to go this weekend and I will be blogging about it so you can see what I got up to and what the spa and hotel are like!

Thank you for reading, I really hope you enjoyed reading about what I got for my birthday!

Until next time,
Charlotte x

MOTHER'S DAY GIFT GUIDE

Hello everyone!

Before I start- I'd just like to say that Mother's Day can be a really sensitive time of year for some people. If you would prefer to skip this blog, I completely understand, and if anybody would like any support, don't hesitate to message me.

If you are celebrating this year, it's time to start thinking about what you're going to get your mum/grandma/granny/auntie/nan or whoever for Mother's Day! This year, it is on Sunday 31st March.
I've come up with a few things that I know my mum loves and hope that it will give you some inspiration for your own shopping!

Firstly, I would recommend a gorgeous mug from Wrendale Designs. There are so many different animals available to suit anybody. My mum loves hedgehogs and has this hedgehog mug at home. We also have pheasant, squirrel and badger mugs too. I just got the tortoise mug for my birthday.

Sticking with the kitchen theme, I love these personalised paddle chopping boards by Holder and Hook. I think these are gorgeous and would also double up well as a serving platter too. I'd be really chuffed to receive one of these and I'm sure your mum would find it really practical as well as sentimental!

Another practical gift is a Bathboard. I can't wait to get one of these when I have my own house (and bath!). These look amazing and are available in so many styles too. The company is based in Darlington, which is local(ish) to me. You could team this gift with a selection of bathbombs from Bomb Cosmetics and a gorgeous candle from The Little Yorkshire Candle to give your mum the ultimate bath hamper. If you go for a gin board, why not add a little bottle of York Gin?

If you're going down the clothing route, yet again I'd recommend browsing the Rydale website. My mum loves the Wistow Printed shirts as they can be dressed up or down. I spoke about my Wistow Pheasant shirt in the Spring issue of Femme Magazine (click here to order yourself a copy or pop into Wild and Westbrooke in York)

Hiho Silver do a lovely range of jewellery, including some gorgeous bracelets that would be a lovely gift. I really like the foxtail bracelet- which would look lovely with a selection of pretty roller beads. I would really like one of these and think they would make a great addition to any outfit.
Finally, how about a pair of boot tassels? I love these handmade feather tassels from Bonny Birds Crafts. I don't have any long boots at the moment but I've been eyeing up the Fairfax and Favor Reginas and would love these tassels when I get them.

Thank you for reading- I hope you've enjoyed this blog and it's given you a few ideas for gifts, or even some ideas of what to add to your wishlist!

Until next time,
Charlotte x

IN THE SPOTLIGHT- YORK (Shopping & Eating)

Hello everyone!

York is one of those places that is perfect for tourists and visitors all year round. The shops and attractions are open through all weathers and there are plenty seasonal events too.
York Fashion Week is coming up next month (25-31 March 2019) which will be an exciting opportunity to explore fashion, style and creativity in the city.

York has so much to offer, and I've categorised a few popular places, along with some of my personal favourites, below. Don't forget that if you're a student, many shops and restaurants accept student discount through apps such as Student Beans or UniDays.

 Shops

Wild & Westbrooke
W&W is my favourite shop in York, selling all the perfect items a country girl could wish for! From Fairfax & Favor to Morris Richardson, they have it all! The family business has been featured in this season's issue of Femme Magazine, where you can browse a huge selection of Holland Cooper clothing. With friendly staff and gorgeous clothes- what's not to love?

 Abraham Moon
Abraham Moon is a gorgeous shop full of luxury tweed clothing and home furnishings. I'll pop some pictures of the shop up on my Instagram highlights so you can have a browse for yourself. My dad has some shirts and a blazer and I'd love to have the cushions and blankets in my home.

The Imaginarium/ Yorkshire Soap Co
The Imaginarium has a massive selection of homewares and gifts. I will pop some more pictures on my Instagram for you to see. My mum got a highland cow head (pictured below) from here. The Yorkshire Soap Co sells gorgeous soaps in the shape of cakes alongside other bathing essentials.

Here's a list of my other favourite shops in the city centre:
And some other popular shops:
 For the fellow Hinchers:
Of course there is the Designer Outlet too, which you can check out here.

Restaurants/Cafes

Attractions

 Hotels
  • Novotel- really family friendly with loads of facilities, including a swimming pool!
  • The Principal- my parents love staying here!
  • There are also various Travelodges and Premier Inns too.

COUNTRY VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT GUIDE

With just under a week to go until Valentine's Day, I thought it might be a good idea to list a few of my favourite gift ideas for both him and her this Valentine's Day. I've tried to keep the country theme running through the guide.

For Her:
The obvious gift for a special girl in your life is a Pandora ring or charm. Pandora have a gorgeous selection of love themed gifts this year, including this Beaded Heart Charm. Most lasses would be over the moon to receive something in a Pandora bag for Valentine's Day, especially a special ring...

If you're going down the jewellery line, why not try Hiho Silver? There are some classic pieces available, like this stunning sterling silver Bumblebee Necklace, or why not choose a gorgeous equestrian themed piece, like the Cherry Roller Snaffle Bangle ?
Bathbombs are extremely popular with lasses as we love having a perfect soak at the end of a long day in the field. I love Bomb Cosmetics as the bathbombs smell really nice and leave your skin feeling so smooth. There are so many available, and my personal favourites include the Crazy Stupid Love bath blaster and the Cherry On Top bath blaster. There are some fabulous gift packs available too.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know that I love these gorgeous rice mice from Heart Of The Dales. Between myself, my mum and my sister, we have a huge collection at home. These would make a perfect gift for your girlfriend or wife, or even as a 'Galentine's' gift for your best friends. The mice are available in various colours and sizes.

Finally- who doesn't love a pair of cosy pyjamas? I am obsessed with my Rydale pyjamas as they are so comfy and look great too! Perfect for lounging about in the evenings and for snuggling up in bed. You could even get matching sets to be ultimate #couplegoals this Valentine's Day.

For Him:
This is my first Valentine's Day in a relationship so I'm not claiming to be an expert on what the lads like, but I've picked out a few bits and bobs that I think look good, as well as some things that I reckon Callum would like too!
Firstly, I would suggest a Morris Richardson Watch. I love mine as it is practical (everybody needs to know the time at some point!) and it's really stylish too. There are various straps available, including tweed, leather and Milanese mesh.

Hiho Silver also do a range of jewellery for men. The Chunky Plaited Leather Bracelet looks really good and is actually half price at the moment! Your other half would look stunning with a new watch on one wrist and a leather bracelet on the other.
Socks never go amiss with men, I know Callum needs some new pairs! These Hortons England socks are really good quality and look really nice too. I know I'd love a pair of these as well- I absolutely love new socks.

Another thing men can never have too many of is shirts. You all know I love Rydale shirts and my wardrobe is full of them. Callum has a few as well and they look really smart and are amazing quality for the price. There are so many colours available as well as the fleece lined shirts. What a great idea!

Finally, I've been eyeing up these gorgeous personalised keyrings by Mackenzie and George for ages and think they would make a perfect Valentine's gift for your special man. You could even get them for you both so you can match!
(Side note- lads, if you're thinking of proposing to your lass this Valentine's Day, why not get her a keyring with her new initials on as a gift? She'd absolutely love it!)

Thanks for reading, I hope I've inspired you a little if you were stuck for what to get you other half this Valentine's Day, other than the usual flowers and chocolate (although there's nothing wrong with them of course!)

Until next time,

Charlotte x

WHAT I GOT FOR CHRISTMAS 2018

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and all the best for 2019.

Before I start, I'd like to say that I am in no way bragging about what I got- I am very lucky to have received some lovely presents and am grateful to everyone who bought me them. This is purely so people can be nosy and see what I got or get some ideas for gifts they might like or might like to get someone.

Now that the disclaimer is out the way, let's crack on with the blog. My main present from my parents was this gorgeous pair of Fairfax and Favor Henley Driving shoes. They are so stylish and look great with any outfit.
I got this Hiho Silver leather bracelet which looks really pretty and is quite simple too, so it goes with lots of outfits. It is only £20 as well!
Also pictured is my Rydale Polly Checked Scarf in the colour gunmetal. It is so cosy and is reasonably priced at £10.

I was really excited to receive my 2019 subscription to In The Country Magazine which I am very excited about. I have been loving Hollie-Ella's magazine this year and can't wait to see what next year's issues will bring. The 2019 In The Country Calendar with illustrations by Rosie Young was another perfect gift which I am excited to use in the New Year.
The feather hairpin is by High Bird Designs and features a shotgun cartridge with colourful game feathers. I am excited to wear this at various events this year.
I also received the Cartridge Fairy Lights by High Bird Designs but I haven't got a picture of them up yet.
The hedgehog is from The Imaginarium in York and is supposed to be a Christmas tree decoration but I am definitely keeping him up all year! He's too cute!

This shirt is from Crew Clothing and looks really nice. I haven't had a chance to wear it yet but will post some pics on Instagram when I do! The frog bathbomb is by Bomb Cosmetics and the perfume is BonBon by Viktor & Rolf.

I got a fair few bits and bobs from Rydale, including the scarf that I mentioned before. I also got a pair of Roxby Canvas Trainers in the 'Spotty Navy' variant. These are only £19.99 and are really comfy.
The shirts are in Sally Pink and Lucy Grape and are 2 for £25. I love wearing these with my new Garton II Fleece Gilet. It looks lovely and has the warmest fleece lining ever! It kept me nice and toasty on Boxing Day.
Finally, my pyjamas are so comfy and look really nice too! Mine match my new shirt and have a pheasant on the top but you can also get a set with a dog or horses too.

I also got some Pandora charms and various other bits and bobs and I'll probably put some pictures up on my story highlights if you'd like to have a look.

For those of you who don't know, I've created a separate Instagram account for my blog and have decided to keep my original account more personal. You're still more than welcome to follow my personal account (@charlottebrown23) but I will be posting all blog related things over on @thatmardyyorkshirelass now. I also have a Facebook page, just search 'That Mardy Yorkshire Lass'.

Thank you for reading and I hope that you all got what you wished for and had a happy and healthy Christmas. Christmas is a difficult time for some people and my love and best wishes go out to everyone who struggled through this time.

Until next time,

Charlotte x
